This weekend I worked on visualizing my goals using the principles of Psycho-Cybernetics.
Maybe you have dabbled in ‘positive thinking’ or ‘visualization’ and are a bit skeptical about what it can really do? You are right to be skeptical as so much positive thinking is very superficial and doesn’t really dig into what actually creates results.
Dr. Maxwell Maltz offers lots of practical insights into how sports people, business men and women, marketers, entrepreneurs, entertainers, and other professional and non professional people can start self programming their minds for greater success.
Recently, I was in Chicago and had the chance to hear several six and seven figure earners speak. Each gave their recommendations, yet they all agreed that reading the book “Psycho-Cybernetics by Maxwell Maltz was one of the single most important things we can do to grow as a person.
What Is Psycho-Cybernetics?
Psycho-Cybernetics is the original text that defined the mind/body connection—the concept that paved the way for most of today’s personal empowerment programs. Turn crises into creative opportunities, de-hypnotize yourself from false beliefs, and celebrate new freedom from fear and guilt.
This is your personal guide to the amazing power of Psycho-Cybernetics and is one of the world’s classic self-help books, a multimillion-copy bestseller proven effective by readers worldwide. Presenting positive attitude as a means for change, Maltz’s teaching has the ring of common sense.
Why Self Image is the Key to Living a Better Life
The “self-image” is the key to human personality and human behavior. Change the self image and you change the personality and the behavior. – Maxwell Maltz, M.D.
The “self-image” sets the boundaries of individual accomplishment. It defines what you can and cannot do. Expand the self-image and you expand the “area of the possible.”
The development of an adequate, realistic self-image will seem to imbue the individual with new capabilities, new talents and literally turn failure into success.
Understanding the psychology of the self can mean the difference between success and failure, love and hate, etc. The discovery of the real self can rescue, recreate, and transform victims of “personality failure”.
Discovering your real self means the difference between freedom and the compulsions of conformity.
This self-image is our own conception of the “sort of person I am”. It has been built up from our own beliefs about ourselves. Most of these beliefs have unconsciously been formed from our past experience and the way other people have reacted to us, especially in early childhood.
From all of these we mentally construct a “SELF” (a picture of the self), once an idea or a belief about ourselves goes into this picture it becomes “true”. We do not question its validity, but proceed to act upon it as if were the truth.
The Self Image is the Key to Living a Better Life Because of two Important Discoveries…
1. All your actions, feelings, abilities and behavior are always consistent with the self-image.
2. The Self Image can be changed.
To illustrate the first point, people who maintain certain beliefs about themselves such as “I’m ugly” will act in alignment with that belief. They will wear clothes and style their hair in ways that make them feel unattractive. Since they have the self-image that they are ugly, their actions demonstrate that belief.
The second point is the self image can be changed. If you change your self-image, you rewrite the blueprint of who you are. Everything changes to align with the self-image.
Changing the self-image is vastly different from positive-thinking. Positive-thinking, is like patching an old garments with new material or putting new wine in old wine skins. You must first change the self-image, and then you will act consistent with that new self-image.
